EU trade chaos: how Europe is getting squeezed by the US and China
Europe likes to boast about its economic muscle, but behind the scenes the story is far grimmer. A new analysis from the Centre for European Reform shows the EU caught in a tightening vice, pushed around by America, undercut by China and paralysed by its own divisions. What Brussels calls “trade policy” increasingly looks like damage control.
Europe’s trade dream is falling apart
For years, EU leaders promised that rules, treaties and clever regulation would protect Europe’s interests. That promise is now wearing thin. Global trade has turned brutal. The US plays hardball to protect its own industry. China floods markets with subsidised goods. And Europe? Europe talks. While others act, Brussels issues statements, launches consultations and hopes for the best.

Washington calls the shots
When the US decides to raise tariffs or pour billions into domestic industry, Europe barely fights back. The EU has legal tools to respond, but lacks the courage to use them. Member states know the price of upsetting Washington: fewer security guarantees and political backlash. So Europe swallows the hit and pretends it was a compromise. The message is clear — when America pushes, Europe yields.
China eats Europe’s lunch
China is an even bigger headache. European exports struggle to break into the Chinese market, while Chinese imports surge into Europe. Factories close, pressure mounts and politicians talk about “de-risking” instead of facing reality. China’s state-backed firms don’t play fair, but Europe seems powerless to stop them. Brussels wants access to Chinese markets without confrontation, yet ends up with the worst of both worlds.
Diversification talk, paralysis in practice
EU leaders insist Europe can trade its way out of trouble by striking deals elsewhere. But progress is painfully slow. Agreements with Latin America and Asia are delayed by endless internal rows, green demands and political grandstanding. While Europe dithers, rivals move in and grab the opportunities.
The uncomfortable truth
This report paints a bleak picture of Europe’s trade future. The EU is still rich, still big, but no longer in control. Dependent on the US, exposed to China and divided at home, Europe is drifting into a position where others decide the rules. Behind the polished speeches and summit photos, Europe’s trade power is quietly slipping away — and Brussels doesn’t seem to know how to stop it.
